As pediatric residents in New York City, we have the privilege of caring for an incredibly diverse population of children. Every day, we see the deleterious impacts of structural racism and socioeconomic inequality on the health of our patients. We also understand the role of toxic stress brought on by centuries of racial discrimination, and its adverse effects on health outcomes. In our own city, we saw COVID-19 disproportionately affect populations of color, precisely because of these structural reasons. Our healthcare systems need to do better for our patients.
