Education

OMEDI: The Office of Medical Education, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Office of Medical Education, Diversity, and Inclusion (OMEDI) embodies the department's commitment to ensuring diversity, inclusion, and equity among our learners, training programs, faculty, staff, and leadership.

The OMEDI team is continuously working to improve, innovate, and create an environment that ensures:

  • Learning in the context of humanistic patient care
  • Positive interactions among faculty, residents, fellows, nursing staff, and students
  • Inclusion of diverse perspectives and voices, which is essential to successful and collaborative work
  • Support for well-being and resilience to both prevent and mitigate burnout

Faculty Highlight: Sarah Lusman, MD

Sarah Lusman, MD, director of the fellowship program and of the Fellows’ Academy, was selected as a 2021 NASPGHAN Foundation Teri Li Young Educator Award winner. This award recognizes individuals in the first phase of their professional career who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and/or nutrition through education scholarship. In addition to her first-author paper looking at innovations in gastroenterology training, she was a co-author with Julie Khlevner, MD, on a motility position paper.

Dr. Lusman was also elected to the Virginia Apgar Academy, an active community of educators at VP&S dedicated to promoting, rewarding, and supporting outstanding education for our medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.


Honors and Awards

Members of the OMEDI team are commited to be both learners and leaders in medical education. Their innovations were recognized in 2021 in a number of areas, highlighted below:

  • Named Barnard College's inaugural Vice President of Health & Wellness, Chief Health Officer
  • 2021 Charles W. Bohmfalk Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching in the Clinical Years
  • 2021 Mailman School of Public Health Dean’s Excellence in Mentoring Award
  • 2021 Columbia VP&S Nominee for Association of American Medical Colleges Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award

Linda Aponte-Patel, MD

  • Co-founded SPARC (Sisterhood of Pediatricians Activated to Realize Change) with pediatric diversity leaders from Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia, Montefiore, NYU, and Mt. Sinai to share education and diversity initiatives through mentoring and scholarship

Hetty Cunningham, MD

  • Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award presented by The Arnold P. Gold Foundation
