Specialty Updates for the General Pediatrician

Over the past eight years the department's continuing medical education (CME) course for pediatricians, Specialty Updates for the General Pediatrician, held on the first weekend in December, has drawn a growing number of attendees. Each year, the program covers new or updated guidelines or practice parameters in subspecialty topics that impact primary pediatric care, with an emphasis on conditions that generally involve a team approach, including the primary care physician and the subspecialist. This year’s event was entirely virtual with pre-recorded lectures and live question and answer sessions. Attendees joined from all over the country and participants had access to content after the event.

Among the topics included in the 2021 course were ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder); adolescent and young adult male health; identification and management of depression in pediatric care; limb length discrepancy and angular deformity in the growing child; ADHD management in outpatient pediatric primary care; updates on management of atopic dermatitis in the primary care setting; update on food allergy; asthma management guidelines; COVID-19 and vaccination; breastfeeding medicine; advances in cerebral palsy; pediatric NAFLD; interventions in pediatric severe obesity; and metabolic and bariatric surgery updates in adolescent morbid obesity.

Given the positive response to the virtual format in 2020 in response to COVID-19, and in an effort to reach a wider audience, the one-and-a-half-day 2021 meeting was again completely virtual.

Columbia Children's Health Webinars

In mid-2020 the department launched a series of monthly webinars to bring our expert knowledge on a broad range of contemporary topics in children's care to the pediatrics community. The entire series is available for viewing on the Columbia Children's Health youtube channel.
