Gentle Respiratory Care

At Columbia, our team has pioneered the art of gentle supportive breathing for the most fragile of infants. We developed nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), and demonstrated early on that using this gentle ventilation in premature infants and babies with pulmonary hypertension led to improved respiratory outcomes which last well beyond their time in the NICU. Indeed, our outcomes for infants with chronic lung disease are the best in US and we have been recognized by the National Institutes of Health for our contribution to respiratory care of preterm infants. This work and our expertise in respiratory support for these infants has received worldwide recognition and set the standard for current neonatal respiratory care.
