Helping To Maintain the Highest Level of Care

Continuing Education
Specialty Updates for the General Pediatrician
Over the past nine years the department's continuing medical education (CME) course for pediatricians, Specialty Updates for the General Pediatrician, held on the first weekend in December, has drawn a growing number of attendees. Each year, the program covers new or updated guidelines or practice parameters in subspecialty topics that impact primary pediatric care, with an emphasis on conditions that generally involve a team approach, including the primary care physician and the subspecialist. This year’s event was entirely virtual with pre-recorded lectures and live question and answer sessions. Attendees joined from all over the country and participants had access to content after the event.
Among the topics included in the 2022 course were:
- abnormal uterine bleeding in adolescents
- sexually transmitted infection updates
- antibiotic management of common pediatric infections
- screening for life-threatening causes of chest pain in children
- a guide to management of voiding dysfunction and neurogenic bladder
- overview of the latest obesity clinical guidelines
- updates in the diagnosis and management of celiac disease
- recognizing primary immune deficiencies; an update on the management of acne vulgaris
- precocious puberty
- identification and treatment of anxiety disorders in the pediatric primary care setting
- sports injuries in the office; optimizing follow-up of the high-risk neonate
- common co-morbidities and management of autism spectrum disorder in the primary care setting.
Given the positive response to the virtual format in 2020 and 2021 in response to COVID-19, and in an effort to continuing to reach a wider audience, the one-and-a-half-day 2022 meeting was again completely virtual.
