Fellowship

80 postdoctoral trainees in 16 subspecialty training programs

The Department of Pediatrics and NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital have more than 80 postdoctoral trainees in 16 subspecialty training programs, with multiple NIH T32 grants. Fellows have extensive clinical responsibilities and are encouraged to participate in local and national activities including conferences, journal clubs, and seminars to complement the activities of their specific programs.

The focus of all programs is clinical, translational, and basic investigative endeavors, and we ensure that mentorship and scholarly oversight of fellows is a high priority. The subspecialty training programs in endocrinology, gastroenterology, and infectious disease are supported by Institutional National Service Awards (NIH T32), and those in anesthesiology, bioinformatics, genetics, and patient safety are supported by additional T32 training grants.

Fellow's Academy

Through the Fellows’ Academy, fellows attend monthly professional development workshops. Topics for discussion include negotiation, leadership in a crisis, writing a CV and cover letter, networking in professional organizations, and difficult conversations.

Fellow Spotlight

Morgan Finkel, MD, an Academic Pediatrics Fellow in primary care, is undertaking a Research Fellowship in Community Health.

Dr. Finkel’s research focuses on drivers and protective factors impacting socioeconomic disparities in early child development, with the goal of understanding how primary care pediatricians can help level the developmental playing field of all children. Her research projects found:

  • A significant positive relationship between the number of social services utilized by families and infant language skills for families living in deep poverty
  • That infants from homes with lower income and less parental education were at higher risk for poor sleep quality. Infants from lower socioeconomic status homes were more likely to co-room, and infants who co-room are at higher risk for poorer sleep quality

Dr. Finkel’s future research will focus on how the home environment contributes to infant sleep quality and its impact on child development, and how primary care interventions can improve the home environment to decrease socioeconomic disparities in early childhood development.
