Continuing Education

Over the past seven years the department's continuing medical education (CME) course for pediatricians, Specialty Updates for the General Pediatrician, held on the first weekend in December, has drawn a growing number of attendees. Each year, the program covers new or updated guidelines or practice parameters in subspecialty topics that impact primary pediatric care, with an emphasis on conditions that generally involve a team approach, including the primary care physician and the subspecialist.

Among the topics included in the 2020 course were Vesicoureteral Reflux and UTI in Children; The White Eye and Leukocoria; Providing Affirming and Equitable Care for LBGTQIA+ Youth; Iron Deficiency Anemia, New Insights into Diagnosis and Management; The Evolution of Telemedicine in Pediatrics and a Few Tips Learned Along the Way; and The REACH Esophageal Atresia Clinic: A Model for Multidisciplinary Care for Children with a Rare/Complex Disorder.

COVID-19

In addition, our expert COVID-19 panel presented topics including COVID-19 Therapeutics and Vaccine Updates; Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Related to COVID-19: Clinical Presentation and Review; and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, Current Understanding of the Pathophysiology.

More than 200 physicians attended the 2019 course, which was held in Columbia's Vagelos Education Center. In response to COVID-19, the one-and-a-half-day 2020 meeting was completely virtual, with 245 attendees.
